Illustrator & Graphic Designer UX. UI Designer
The Full Story
This project is the Google Venture Design Sprint that was given 5 days to execute. The design challenge I chose was “Savr” which included problems and concerns, users personas, and user highlight research.
Savr is a startup app that wants to make it easier for people to discover
and make new recipes. Though recently Savr has received negative
feedback regarding instructions, advanced techniques, and unclear
steps.
Creating an accurate and easy-to-follow guide to help users prepare meals involving simple steps and considerations.
-
Write recipes with ordered steps from start to finish.
-
Design for a mobile application.
-
Design a better experience where users can easily prepare,
start, and finish a meal.
With the existing user research provided by Bitesize UX, I
learned about the frustrations others had with learning new recipes.
Nick was the User Persona that finally represented all other users.
On the first day after reviewing the existing research related to Nick's
pain points and goals, I was able to frame HMW (How Might We)
questions to generate innovative solutions. The goal for creating a
cohesive start-to-finish user experience.
1.)Make sure Nick stays on the right track while cooking.
2.)Ensure that the cooking instructions are easy to follow.
3.)Learn new and advanced cooking techniques ahead of time.
Before I started sketching, I spent some time to research on other
mobile applications that have similar functions to Savr to get insight.
I chose to focus on Yummly, Epicurious, and Tasty.
-
Cooking instructions are written in a step-by-step forma
-
Each step has individual videos and photos to help users stay “on course”.
-
Has recipes that fit into everyday life, ie fast recipes, recipes for children, recipes to take on the go and so on.
-
Incorporates an online community where you can share recipes with others.
Offers cooking video recipes and step-by-step instructions.

Has a vast amount of recipes thinking outside of box of what users may ask for, ie seasonal recipes, recipes based on what produce are in season, celebrity chef recipes and so on.
Ideation: Thumbnail Sketches
I came up with some quick ideas, spending about 3 minutes each to come up with some solutions to solve Nicks in app issues. Being able to to give accurate instructions through the pictures and videos.
Four Panel Boards
After choosing the screen that was most crucial, I began to build on it in four panels.
On day 3 I made a final decision based on the designs I created for the panel board. Showing a start to finish experience of Nick searching and discovering new and recipes. I included videos and photos showing step by step instructions to prepare meals easily and efficiently. This will make Nicks cooking experience more pleasant.
I spent Day 4 creating High Fidelity Screens. Incorporating
visual guidelines showing the entire cooking process,
“From Start to Finish”. To solve Nicks frustrations I included several visual guidelines including pictures and
videos of displayed recipes. With these visual guidlines Nick can learn advanced techniques beforehand and get “Step by Step” instructions.
Introduction to the website, “Attempting to welcome users by showing others going through the same process as them”
Giving Nick a variety of meals to choose from.
Showing detailed videos and pictures of ingredients before
the cooking process. Letting Nick know whats needed
before-hand.
Complete recipes with complete accuracy and be confident
enough to continue on your cooking journey.
On the fifth and final day of the design sprint I conducted 5
tests with the updated Savr application. 5 people
where a part of these Usability Tests.
-
5 out of 5 users like the variety of recipes that the app has.
-
5 out 5 users like that there are videos for each individual step, “especially” the ingredients.
-
5 out of 5 users like the instructions in step-by-step format.1 out of 5 users would share recipes via app
-
3 out of 5 users want to see cooking time. Including the step in-between.
Based on the usability test results, it can be concluded that users were impressed by the use of videos and imagery to assist in learning new recipes. The positive response from users can be attributed to Visual Learning, Enhanced Engagement, Time Efficiency, Solving Difficulty, and Accessibility.
